GCSE Physics energy calculations

Calculate work, kinetic and gravitational energy, power and percentage efficiency.

Practise

Choose an equation: energy

A heater transfers energy at a constant power of 1000 W for 8 min. Calculate the energy transferred in J. Give your answer to 3 significant figures.

Work through the calculation

Check intermediate steps, then use your unrounded working for the final answer. Each numerical check uses 3 significant figures. These steps provide support; the main answer is checked separately.

Step 1

Convert the heating time to seconds. Give your answer to 3 significant figures.

Show this step

Multiply the time in minutes by 60.

Answer: 480 s (3 significant figures).

Step 2

Now calculate the final answer to the main question.

Show this step

Power is energy transferred per second. Convert the time to seconds, then find E = Pt.

Answer: 4.80 × 10^5 J (3 significant figures).

Treat the given values as exact unless an uncertainty is stated.

Use decimals or e notation, e.g. 4.2e-3. Enter the unit separately.

Hint

Power is energy transferred per second. Convert the time to seconds, then find E = Pt.

Worked solution
  1. Rule: P = E / t.
  2. t = 8 × 60 = 480 s.
  3. E = Pt = 1000 × 480 J.
  4. Answer: 4.80 × 105 J (3 significant figures).

Calculate energy and efficiency with matching units

A 2.0 kg object rises 1.5 m with g = 10 N kg⁻¹. Its gravitational energy increase is mgh = 30 J. If the lifting device receives 50 J, efficiency = 30/50 = 0.60 = 60%. The input must cover the same lifting process.

Efficiency is useful output divided by total input. A percentage needs multiplication by 100. For kinetic energy, square the speed in E = ½mv²; doubling speed gives four times the kinetic energy at unchanged mass.

Practise energy transferred by heating

Foundation and Higher: this set covers content common to both tiers. Some calculations need several steps.

Energy transfers

Work done by a force acting along the movement is force × distance. Kinetic energy uses the square of the speed; gravitational energy uses the stated gravitational field strength and height change. Useful output divided by total input gives efficiency. Multiply by 100 for a percentage. For heating and changes of state, use the separate thermal calculations resource.
