GCSE density calculations

Find density from dimensions, water displacement or liquid measurements; convert density units.

Practise

Density from mass and volume

An object has mass 0.012 kg and volume 10 cm³. Calculate its density in kg m⁻³. Give your answer to 3 significant figures.

Treat the given values as exact unless an uncertainty is stated.

Use decimals or e notation, e.g. 4.2e-3. Enter the unit separately.

Hint

Convert cm³ to m³, then divide mass by volume.

Worked solution
  1. V = 0.00001 m³.
  2. ρ = 0.012 / 0.00001 kg m⁻³.
  3. Answer: 1.20 × 103 kg m⁻³ (3 significant figures).

Mass and volume

Density is mass divided by volume. Use kg with m³ for kg m⁻³, or g with cm³ for g cm⁻³. A liquid’s mass excludes its container. For displacement, subtract the initial reading from the final reading. At constant mass an increase in volume reduces density. These questions use exact supplied readings; experimental uncertainty is discussed in the density practical guide.
