Testing double-slit fringe spacing

8 marks · A-level · original practice case

Write your working and explanations below or on paper. Your responses stay in this page; PhysicsHelp does not submit or save them. Copy anything you want to keep before closing it. Check calculations separately from method marks. Use unrounded working between parts.

The situation

Light passes through slits separated by 0.30 mm. Screen distance D is varied. Simulated mean fringe spacings are rounded to 0.1 mm. Use the small-angle model w = λD/s. A fitted line has gradient 2.0 mm m⁻¹.

Simulated mean fringe spacingsThe same values are given in the table. The stated fitted line is shown where supplied.. Horizontal axis: D / m, 0 to 2. Vertical axis: w / mm, 0 to 4. Exact values are also listed below the graph.00.511.5201234D / mw / mm

Part (a)

Determine the wavelength from the fitted gradient and slit separation. [2 marks]

Give the numerical answer to 2 significant figures.

Part (b)

Calculate the predicted spacing at D = 1.8 m. [2 marks]

Give the numerical answer to 2 significant figures.

Part (c)

Explain how measuring across ten fringe intervals improves the estimate of mean spacing. [2 marks]

Part (d)

Explain why doubling slit separation reduces fringe spacing. [2 marks]

Marking rubric and worked answers

Indicative practice marks. Method marks assess valid working; accuracy marks require the associated valid method. Independent points stand on their own. Tick only points supported by your response. Do not award the same explanation twice. These ticks record your judgement, not an examiner’s result.

Part (a) marking points

Final answer: 6.0 × 10-7 m. Numerical checks assess the final value only; they do not check working or the number of digits typed.

No earlier numerical result is required. Award method credit for valid working and accuracy credit for the stated answer. Accept a defensible equivalent method; wrong physics cannot earn dependent accuracy credit.

Common errors: Use λ = gradient × slit separation, not divide.

Part (b) marking points

Final answer: 3.6 × 10-3 m. Numerical checks assess the final value only; they do not check working or the number of digits typed.

Use the wavelength from part (a) in w = λD/s with D = 1.8 m and s = 0.00030 m.

Common errors: Convert slit separation from millimetres to metres.

Part (c) marking points

Award each distinct physical point once. Equivalent scientifically correct wording is creditable; a contradictory statement cannot earn the same point.

Part (d) marking points

Award each distinct physical point once. Equivalent scientifically correct wording is creditable; a contradictory statement cannot earn the same point.

Acceptable alternatives: Use w = λD/s at fixed λ and D to show half the spacing; a physical path-difference explanation is needed for the second point.
